Larry HurtadoIt's crazy when you think something like 98% of people never even see a trial because they're afraid of the years judges give out like candy. Our justice system will never be fixed as long as we allow it to be a cash cow for county's and private prison owners. Too many people profit off the incarceration of American citizens. I myself was charged with a felony crime I never committed with absolutely no proof. Facing up to two years in prison they offered me deal after deal. Stood my ground and paid a lawyer 15k to fight my case. During the trial they put my entire life out there and tried to make look like this horrible person. Long story story, I won, took the jury 15min to find me innocent. Unfortunately not everyone is blessed as I am to have a family to help with support and funds to get me thru this. I pray we find a way to fix our justice system.

Yasir BartonOn January 15th, 2015, a man was found unresponsive in his cell at the Broome County Jail in Binghamton, New York. This man's name was Salladin Barton, and his story is one of heartbreak and injustice. Salladin was arrested in June of 2013 on a violation of probation. He was also charged with felony counts of first degree robbery, second degree robbery, and fourth degree grand larceny. Barton and another man, allegedly accosted and robbed a man of his spare change. Already, Salladin's case has veered into unlawful territory. According to New York State law, grand larceny in the fourth degree is defined as, any theft of property where the value of the property is greater than $1,000. In other words, the charges do not fit the crime. Salladin could not afford to post bail, and tragically he would never see his day in court. He spent the next and final 19 months of his life in jail. During these 19 months, Salladin suffered a battery of abuses. He was subjected to emotional and physical abuse from the guards and denied basic human rights. Salladin suffered from both bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, which made him an ever larger target for abuse. His life was routinely threatened and he was told his family members would be hurt. Salladin was often called horrific names, pepper sprayed, and frequently beaten in the head and body by "beat down squads", groups of correctional officers. The beatings were so brutal, they caused Salladin to bang his head against the cell bars, screaming for a reprieve. Guards starved Salladin by placing food just out of his reach and then later throwing the food away. Other inmates tried to help by giving him their Good Source packets, a nutritional supplement used in the jail. In addition, his clothes were often taken from him, leaving him naked in his cell. He was shackled and placed in solitary confinement for long periods of time. Solitary confinement has been shown to have debilitating effects on an inmate's mental health. This was especially for true for Salladin. The abuses and inhumane conditions he endured further exacerbated his mental illnesses. As a result of the beatings he endured, Salladin was often in pain and pleading for medical assistance. He started having seizures, which he had never previously experienced. He suffered from blackouts, dizziness, shaking, migraines, and often had bumps, especially on his head, cuts, infections, and bleeding in his mouth. Salladin was put on suicide watch, medical observation, and even hospitalized. Upon arrival at the hospital, he was admitted for seizures, a head injury, and hyponatremia. This condition occurs in the body when the level of sodium is abnormally low. Salladin was receiving the drug Trileptal to treat his seizures. A common side effect of Trileptal is hyponatremia. The doctors at the jail failed to recognize this and as a result, Salladin did not receive more intensive patient monitoring prior to his Trileptal dosage being increased. Upon his release from the hospital, a thyroid ultrasound was also recommend, this was never completed. Shortly before Salladin passed away, he spoke with his attorney. Salladin has previously been in and out of the Broome County jail for minor offenses and in the past, had only spent days or a few weeks at a time incarcerated. It was during one of these earlier incarcerations, that Salladin had his hand broken when an officer slammed the cell door closed. Salladin's attorney was aware of the previous and current abuse and was working on having him transferred to a mental health facility. On January 14th, the day before he died, fellow inmates recall Salladin being in a good mood and telling them he was going to be released and sent to a mental hospital. Tragically, this never happened. That same day, correction officers entered his cell and beat him so badly, they caused serious injury, pain, and suffering. The next day, while speaking with another inmate, Salladin abruptly stopped speaking and fell to the floor unconscious. Inmates report that Salladin was left in this state for an unreasonable period of time before he was attended to by medical personal. When Salladin's family was notified about his death, they were told he died of drug overdose. Jail officials claim Salladin's girlfriend slipped him drugs when she came to visit him. This of course, proved to be false. In addition, three different toxicology reports came back inconclusive. Then the Sherrif, David E. Harder claimed Salladin died from Artane intoxication. While he did have an elevated level of Artane in his system and this could be a contributing factor, the Medical Review Board ruled this was not the cause of death. They have concluded that Salladin's clinical cause of death was lethal hyperkalemia in addition to an undiagnosed Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone secretion (SIADH). This was most likely caused by the prolonged prescribed use of Trileptal and excessive water intake. Hyperkalemia occurs when the potassium level in your blood is higher than normal. SIADH impairs your body's ability to excrete water. His autopsy report also diagnosed Salladin with untreated pneumonia. What this means is that Salladin had undiagnosed medical conditions that were exacerbated by the drugs prescribed by the doctors at the jail. As a result, of the medical personal's negligence, these medical conditions were left unchecked and continued to worsen, causing the death of Salladin Barton. In addition, due to the months of physical and emotional abuse and starvation he suffered from, Salladin's body was weak and worn down. While Salladn's story is unique in that the abuse and neglect he endured were so extreme, unfortunately, he is not the only one who has suffered in Sherrif Harder's jail. www.facebook.com/JusticeForSalB/

I just don't understand what kind of souls do these ppl (the alleged witness, the arresting officer, the judge, the prosecutor, the district attorney, the public defender, the C Os, the inmates who continously beat him) have!!! There was no way his mother's heart could endure so much pain. May they both Rest in Peace~

Sydney Hart8month before he got lock for the so call bookbag robbery he was arrested for stealing a delivery truck and crashing it (him and his boy) they didnt tell you that in the paper and it he was charge with grand larceny... so he pled guilty and took a Y.O (youth offender) and got probation When he got lock for the bookbag his bail was 3 thousand so out of that 300 was to be paid cause its 10% you basically pay in cash . For the so call bookbag incident he and his boy was lock for robbery, they forgot to put the "assault" and again Grand larceny hmmmm ... his boy was set free but because he was on probation he had a bail ... They said they didnt have the money to pay the bail but his mom had 7 kids and all except 2 was adopted..hmmmm so she was getting a check hmmmm He was indicated on robbery of mexican immigrant Roberto Bautista for taking his backpack which contained a digital camera an Ipod and $700 in cash. Of Bautista said he punched him in the face.. so because he violated his probation his bail was DENIED .. OKAY LETS TALK ABOUT RIKERS There is no way you can accumulate 400 box days by being innocent and not causing hell...(this is a fact) box days on average incident was 10-25 days for every situation. Not so much infraction.. OHHHH RIKERS DONT HAVE A BOX. RIKERS HAVE PUNITIVE SEGREGATION BIG DIFFERENCE LOOK IT UP ..BUT IMA SAY A SHORT VERSION ANYWAY "BOX". IS ISOLATION FROM EVERYONE. "SEGREGATION" IS YOU STAY IN YOUR CELL WITH PEOPLE AROUND YOU ..also (not saying he didnt have mental illness) but 95% of adolescence inmates played the suicidal card to not go to the box ..they are called box beaters... look at thr stats of how much mental health adolescents rikers had when there was a box.....Now look how much they have now that there isnt a box.. i can bet my bottom dollar its down 90% OK BACK TO HIS CASE The reason he was released was not because he was found innocent he wasnt found innocent or guilty.. he had to be released because the district attorney had filled a memo with the court that Bautista who accused browder had gone back to Mexico. And the district attorney Lost contact with him and his brother... So what was next.......they had no "burden of proof " which means no witness no case ...... thats the oldest trick in the book for inmates ....to wait it out til the accuser stop showing up for court cause they have lives and not gonna keep wastong their time especially for a small case and for a immigrant... OKAY NOW HE IS RELEASED. im sure its not easy being home after being lock. Everyone handle it different so he is getting alot of shine They dont talk to you about he got locked up again.... when he was home for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct ... because his brother "Got rob" and they went to confront the guys who robbed his older brother... .. he got released and days before he had to go back to court he had a successful hang up... (this is a sad part either way) ON THE NIGHT HE COMMITTED SUICIDE He had 2 empty bottle of "antipsychotic drug" on a table at his home... was it the drug that he was taking made him commit suicide or was it those drugs he didnt take that made him commit suicide...?... One thing for sure 2 things are for certain. Rikers just hold inmates because the have to be held until the courts say so. .. Alot of roles was played in his incarceration.. but dont blame rikers.. and also when alot of these kids claim mental health issues they are often put on medications so these medications are meant for real people with problems so when you do take it be sure to know you will have problems.. and even he said that he didnt have mental health issues before he went to rikers...hmmmm Anyway its a sad story but people are exploiting it for personal gains and spotlight... cause there are kids in jail now but i dont see jay z coming to visit.... melo visited, kiss visited where is Jay-Z at... exactly Disclaimer: these are my views and my views only. Not the views of corrections or the nyc department of corrections and/or their affiliates

This is a story about injustice and I am wondering if Jay-Z and whomever else was involved in the production of this considered this fact before they paid that asshole to sit behind his antique desk and give commentary.

Danielle DameThank you for your work in exposing the continuation of racial injustice, murder, and abuse covered up by white people in power at Rikers Island through the Kalief Browder story on spike. I cannot watch it but in twenty minute increments because I am so shaken by it. Our society needs more brave people in the public eye, and with the power and respect you hold, to help bring to light the problems with mass incarceration in our penal system. "Their only crime is that they're poor" ... this is truly a shock to most people who have no experienced it and I thank you for helping expose it on a more national level. My brother was incarcerated and was bailed out. My parents paid his bail. For much more abhorrent and viable crimes than poor Kalief. If he was poor and person of color the lord only knows what would've happened to him. I am a member of SURJ and I will continue to be an ally in the fight against racial injustice, in the penal system and in our streets. Much love.

GM Miguel FigueroaThis is a call to anyone who may be able to assist. On Sept 2nd., 1985, ( Labor Day ) I was arrested for the alleged robbery of a child's bike ( I truly did not take ). Yes, people I know did , in fact , steal the bike. I was there but attempted to stop it , non violently ( because I knew almost everyone involved. I was able to prevent them from harming the victoms, but was unable to prevent the theft. I was arrested , and spent 1yr. 2 mos. in jail awaiting trial. All the while contending my innocense. To convict me the complaintiff ( Timothy ) { younger brother } and witness ( Robert ) { older brother } willfully exchanged identities on the stand. So, Robert could use his military title in the complaintiff's spot to sway the jury. That constitutes perjury. It was acquiesced by the ADA then covered up on the translated version ( by the courts ). I made mention, at that time , to my represention ( legal aide attorney ) , and was told that " sometimes a younger brother uses the older brother's name to gain rep ". So, I didn't argue. I made statements reflecting my confussion in their ID's. That were also extracted from the translated version. Things got so bad the ADA syopped the stenographer to tell my co-defendants " If you want your plea bargains you have to say he (I) did something. Anything " The following week , after sentencing, I was rushed UP STATE , so I would'nt be able to reach out for help. Because, the phone calls are not free so contacting someone was almost impossible. I served 4 yrs. in ATTICA CF, and 8 yrs. on parole. I can't get a job. I am willing to go on POLLYGRAPH , if it would help my situation. I know the : coplaintiff , witness' , and ADA ; can't ( won't ) do the same. I'm stating all of this because I need help. I need a legal venue to persue this because I dont want to seek vengeance via pistol. Although, it is always tempting me, as more of my life is wrecked due to this injustice. Hoping someone could point me in a direction of people who can help me. If I had done this I would have accepted 1 1/2- 4 1/2yrs. when I already had 1yr. 2mos. incarceration. My story didn't change in over 25 yrs. Because when you are victomized you NEVER forget. I lost too much due to the lies used to convict me. TY LIFES CORRIDORS by Miguel L. Figueroa written 1/20/86 Staring out a window at a world so full of sin Searching for an answer for these bars that hold me in Don’t know who to turn to can’t trust family anymore Looking for a remedy down life’s corridors DOWN LIFES CORRIDORS Walking down the back roads stench perfumes the air Watching people die of hunger and the world don’t seem to care Picked up as a vagrant, and then tried as a thief No, jail is not the answer cause it’s cruel beyond belief IT’S CRUEL BEYOND BELIEF Justice has died and left us behind And, the fate of the children, are in the hands of the blind Darkness has come to rest in the land of the free Here’s part of the solution to know we are the key WE ARE THE KEY Brother killing brother is all part of evil’s plan Drugs are running ramped, babies born with gun in hand When will people wake up And, when will they believe If we don’t all come together soon in the end we will to grieve AND, DO WE WANT TO GRIEVE Justice has died and left us behind And, the fate of the children, are in the hands of the blind Darkness has come to rest in the land of the free Here’s part of the solution to know we are the key WE ARE THE KEY Staring out a window at a world so full of sin Searching for an answer for these bars that hold me in Don’t know who to turn to can’t trust family anymore Looking for a remedy down life’s corridors

PastorJames YoungJESUS EXPLAINS THE STRENGTH OF THE FOUNDATION Luke 6:46] And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? [47] Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: GOOD FOUNDATION [48] He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. (The truth) BAD FOUNDATION [49] But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great. Note: Building the right foundation consist of hearing and doing, in other words hearing the truth and applying what was heard, because if we only just hear and see the blue print, and don't apply the blue print properly we will end up with a house without a foundation and every house without a foundation will immediately fall when the storms of life beat up against it, it will fall with a great crash. Jesus came with grace and truth, but its not enough just to hear the truth, we have got to apply the truth in order for it to work.

Derrick Barron ChilakaThis is God's given vision; God's vision. My Thought About The Future Generation! THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE GENERATION! The Bible says, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6). Your nation's youth are her greatest asset, and you must have them in focus. A lot of people want today's satisfaction for themselves and are not thinking about the future generations--our adorable children---the leaders of tomorrow. No wonder the LORD Jesus loves them so dearly, and never gets weary of them. Once, His disciples tried to prevent people from bringing their children to Him, but He rebuked them saying, "Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God" (Mark 10:14). My beloved preserved brethren, it's important for us to give special attention to children especially the destitute children in our cities, street corners, squatter camps, slums, under the bridges etc! These ones live on squalor, abject poverty, neglect and despair. But we can bring them hope. Many of them are frustrated and bereft of a chance to live. Some die every day from starvation, with no one to help. Most have turned beggars on the streets. A child turned beggar from a tender age would surely become a violent adult. He would take out his anger and frustration on society. This is one of the reasons for increasing crimes in society; the reason we must do something now. According to the Bible, children are a blessing, and a gift from the LORD (Psalm 127:3). God expects them to be raised in the right way (Proverbs 22:6). It's important that we give then special attention and consideration when making decisions, whether or not they are our biological children. It's your responsibility to put things in place or set things right to safeguard the future of our children. Remember, every child is your child. SUCCESS IS MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE AS WE MET! I grew up in the STREET and I know what takes to survive the STREET. There are so many young people in the street! Many of them are God's army generals.

Mikey HawkinsThank the Clintons and their Crime Bill and all the other Liberal Politicians who turned a blind eye. Black folks (most of them) kill me. If you want to rail against hate, rail against a system that has destroyed the black family and has imprisoned thousands of young black men (many with no priors) incarcerated because of possessing a small quantity of marijuana. Like this young man the majority cannot post bail. So they are left in prison with a high risk of being turned into hardened criminals by the system. Obama, the savior, did nothing for these young men, and he certainly had the power to do so.

Nobody will EVER know what this mother went through unless they were in her shoes coulda, woulda, shoulda, everyone always says until it's you. This lady lived in poverty, husband left her, medical issues, and being unable to work because of that, she had other children, and her son incarcerated for something he did not do. Being convicted of a felony for joyriding in a bread truck and being on probation is what denied him bail. So before anyone says she failed her son please inform us of how you would have handled right here. Stop calling people out unless you personally know the situation and the parties involved.

Lydia SantiagoAll due respect the previews for the documentary about Kalief Browder r one sided n unfair...if ur going 2 tell a story about a broken system make sure u start with the arrest n why the judicial system left him in confinement... Maybe just maybe if parents n the public n all these liberals took time out 4 the youth b4 they end up on rikers maybe u wouldn't b calling 4 the closure of Rikers that's not gonna change anything except the borough our youths will b placed when they continue their behaviours...Correction officers r tasked with the job of trying 2 now control n instill some type of order 4 children that had no guidance out in these streets...pls Jayz let's take this real walk together...let's really help our youth instead of looking 4 a scap goat n ignoring the truth...accountability of our youth begins at home...God bless

Rappers twisting stories and the minds of the youth for that dollar no one wants the positive truths the negatives grab the attention. Then we stop look to the left and the right and realize they next to me and me myself have had a part to play in this. Taught from youth that this is the normality of our society and anyone that says different is crazy.... It takes a reality check daily to keep me myself in check. Others have thrown away there own conscious to fit the World. Have I done the same in some aspects... Fed up Society.

Kyle HaleyIf this is Jay Z I like how's he bringing out the truth. There's so much "persuasion" to convict convict convict. Bag it and tag it basically.. I'm no perfect man but after taking multiple Criminal Justice classes I've gained a perception that specifically black males are usually influenced to admit guilt. This also includes programs such as underground informants in college that have scared tactics used against them to wear a wire and become a snitch to make cops jobs easier. Put innocent people not trained in positions where they can die. The criminal justice system in general is Corrupt and prejudice. Be a good person with good morals. Be ethical and humble. Help one another. ✌ PEACE

I hope God sees this ......shameful. They want to rikers down for development and luxury homes.....shut it down regardless, it's a wicked place .
